Shoes for an Autumn wedding

With September just around the corner, now is the perfect time to explore the best shoes for an autumn wedding (autumn officially starts on 22nd September in the UK). This year seems to have gone really quickly so far, but I have to say I'm a bit of a fan of autumn and think it's a wonderful time of year to get married. True, the weather can be a little unpredictable but in many ways you put less expectation on it that you might for a summer wedding, which actually takes the pressure off a little. That said, certainly here in the UK the weather in September and October can actually be pretty beautiful especially if we get more of an Indian summer- you end up with sunshine but it's not too hot, which can be the perfect combination.

So which wedding shoes do you choose for an Autumn wedding? It's one of the most versatile seasons so it's good to go for something a little transitional ie not full on summer or full on winter, but somewhere in between. There are a few factors to consider when deciding on shoes for your autumn wedding, so let's go through them now.

1. Open or closed toe?

The truth is there is no right or wrong here- both open and closed toes work really well for an autumn wedding. If you do go for an open toe, it's good to choose more of a classic peep toe as opposed to something really open and strappy. A peep toe isn't as open as a strappy sandal so if it is a chilly or wet day, your toes won't feel too exposed but you still get the look of an open toe.

2. Transitional shapes

Autumn is the perfect season to choose a more transitional shoe shape. What do I mean by that? I mean a shoe which isn't fully closed so something like a two part shoe as opposed to a full court shoe, or a peep toe with a closed back, as opposed to a strappy sandal. These transitional shapes are great for autumn weddings as your feet won't get too hot if it's sunny, or too cold if the temperature drops.

3. Consider the material

Choosing the right material is important when deciding on your autumn or winter wedding shoes. Whilst you can obviously where whatever you like (that's the most important thing after all!), if you do want to be able to wear your shoes again after the big day it's best to avoid manmade materials such as satin or textured fabrics. These can be incredibly difficult to clean if you get them wet and dirty, and natural materials such as leather and suede are a lot easier to bring back to being (almost) as good as new.

4. Weatherproof your shoes!

Whether or not you follow the advice of step three, it's vital you do as much as you can to weatherproof your shoes before you wear them. There are things you can do before, during and after the wedding to prevent as much damage as possible, and protect your shoes. Click here to checkout my blog with more details on how.

5. Have fun with colour

Autumn is the perfect season to bring some colour into your wedding by having some fun with your wedding shoes. It's an incredibly rich, vibrant season so take your lead from Mother Nature and choose rich, deep tones to echo this and create a bit of contrast. If you don't want to go all out with an autumnal coloured wedding shoe, why not go for a plum or berry pedicure instead- this adds a perfect seasonal touch to even the most classic ivory wedding shoe.
