Style it Like Downton- Shoes and Accessories
Posted on September 12 2019
We've really enjoyed looking into the wedding style of the Downton Abbey characters over this past week, and today we're onto our favourite subject- the shoes! We also show you the perfect accessories so you can top and tail your Downton wedding look in style.
Time for T
One of the most iconic looks of 1920s shoes is the t-bar, and as you can most probably tell from looking at our collection, we are most definitely big fans! My very first pair of shoes when I was tiny was a pair of red t-bar Mary Jane shoes, so perhaps this is where the love affair started! T- bars give a really flattering fit, as they visually elongate your leg apparently, rather than cutting it off at the ankle which can have the opposite effect.
A perfect choice for a Downton Abbey wedding shoe is our new Paloma, which is so 'of the time' it could almost be an original twenties shoe! It has an elegant almond shaped closed toe, but the straps on the sides make the shoe quite open too so you have the best of both worlds.
Another shoe which has been in the collection for many years and is a personal favourite of mine is the lovely Ginger. Truly twenties in styling, this metallic t-bar (available in gold or silver) is one of the most comfortable shoes I own and is a real go to for any occasion. The leather is super soft and the design makes it somewhere between a shoe and a sandal.
For those after a more classically bridal look with a vintage feel look no further than the ever chic Mimi. Another favourite, Mimi is actually the only shoe which has been in the collection since the brand launched over eleven years ago! A beautiful combination of ivory satin with a gold leather t-bar, Mimi is the perfect vintage wedding shoe and goes with a wide variety of gowns.
Our final choice for your perfect Downton Abbey style wedding shoe is Gardenia. The shape of this iconic Rachel Simpson shoe was actually taken from an original twenties shoe, so the toe shape is truly authentic to the period. Wear with the Mia vintage inspired clutch bag to complete the look.
Time to Accessorise
You may remember in our Style it Like Downton Hair blog (click here if you missed it!) we showed you a few gorgeous vintage hair ideas for your wedding. Hair jewellery was popular in this era, and choosing a beautiful vintage style piece will really make your look.
Hair combs are an effortless way to instantly add some glamour- choose one with art deco influences such as baguette and marquise shaped crystals. Go for a gold setting rather than silver if you want more of a warm, antique look. We love the Goldfinch haircomb from Laurel Lime- wear it at the back of your head as shown, or on the side.
A stunning alternative to the hair comb but equally authentic is the head piece. For a sleek bob wear it across the forehead or following your hairline for a truly twenties look, or with long hair go for a half up style and tuck the band or tiara around the back of the head.
