Wedding Wednesday- Laura and Hugh's Relaxed Summer Wedding
Posted on July 31 2019

Today's Wedding Wednesday we are excited to share with you Laura and Hugh's beautiful relaxed wedding in Donegal. Held in stunning Northern Ireland Hugh and Laura' wedding has a lovely chilled vibe, featuring scenic sandy beaches and summer BBQ!
1. Tell us about the wedding- theme, location, colours...
We really wanted to make it feel more like a party than a wedding, it was very relaxed with a rustic, summer barbecue feel.
We wanted to make sure that the kids were involved in the ceremony, and that our guests would really enjoy the whole day.
We wanted a nice relaxed wedding day ourselves, so opted for a BBQ instead of a “turkey and ham” sit down dinner. Hugh wore his Tartan colours and opted for Trews for comfort and got his suit tailor made in Scotland.
I wanted Scottish heather and wild thistle in my bouquet and I didn’t really want the fresh flower look, so I went for dried flowers.
We got married on the grounds of Drumhalla House, Rathmullan, just 10 mins away from our home looking on to the Kinnegar beach. It's so breathtaking driving into the venue, with beautiful lawns, trees and the big house is just beautiful. The weather was so gorgeous on the day- we felt so lucky!
We firstly had a gorgeous Prosecco reception and then a bbq reception in their onsite marquee and everyone commented on how different and gorgeous it was.
2. Who was your wedding dress by?
I wore a Katya Katya gown. I knew I wanted a vintage look and when I tried the dress on, I just felt gorgeous in it. It was super comfy, which was something that was very important to me. I have watched brides walking around carrying up their dress on the dance floor or not being able to eat their dinner because it is so tight!! It was a dream to wear and I only wish I had another reason to wear it!!

3. Which Rachel Simpson shoes did you pick and why?
I wore Amalia in Blue. I loved all the Amalia range from the moment I set my eyes on them and to be honest any of the pastel colours would have worked for me but being old fashioned (just a wee bit) I went for my something blue!!

4. Tell us about a wedding moment that will be unforgettable to you.
It was definitely the sand ceremony with our children. It was very special and everyone doted on them and still comment on it. We each had our own sand vase and we poured our sand in together in a large vase and became.”one” and the children were at the “centre: of our world!
Hugh did want to add his big moment was when I walked down the isle! Aww...
I also throughly loved the music. It was just so special to me. We all love our music on both sides and our band ‘In their Thousands’ just blew everyone away with some fantastic blues and folk.
Hughs friends provided the music for our ceremony Bride Monds Watson ( SOAK) , Michael Keaney and Hannah Peel. Hughs dad is apart of the Conwal Singers and they provided the music for the Prosecco reception. All the music was very personal and special to us and we love that our friends were so involved.
5. What was your first dance song?
‘To Love somebody’ by Nina Simone (because I love her and our band did a whole set of similar music and it just felt right and they were amazing at covering this song) It was a very special evening from that moment on..
6. What is your Top Tip for wedding planning?
We only had 5 and half months to plan the wedding so we had to be quite smart about the planning. We didn’t have lots of time where we would see things and think ‘we should get that for the wedding’, and in hindsight, we didn’t need any of the small things. We had the most wonderful day and so did our guests.
7. What would your advice be for future brides?
I would advise you to be comfortable in your dress and not be worried about all the add ons that you think you might need. Sometimes the old folk are right when they say less is more! Also concentrate on good food and a great band!
