Mimosa Papillion Wedding - Ellie and Jon's Unique Countryside Wedding
Posted on August 14 2019
This Wedding Wednesday we have a very special wedding to share with you. Last year Rachel Simpson Shoes turned 10 years old and to celebrate we launched a competition for one lucky bride to win exclusive, gorgeous Mimosa Papillion! That lucky bride was Ellie Higgins and a year has flown by and now we get to share with you Ellie and Jon's wedding. We love all the personal touches they put into their wedding and we are sure you will too....
1. Tell us a little bit about you as a couple
We met in November 2014 when Jon saw me working at a local pub. He then added me on Facebook (cringe) and I was really blunt with him until we realised out mutual love of dogs! We then went on our first date, ice skating at a local garden centre. Fast forward to now and we have been together for almost 5 years, in this time we have bought a house and adopted a rescue dog.
2. Tell us about the wedding?
Our wedding was held at a nearby country pub, they have a large function room and a beautiful lake and fields out the back which made the perfect backdrop for the photos.
We wanted something informal so that people felt they could let their hair down and have a laugh and that’s exactly what happened! Our table plan was the Harry Potter marauders map and the tables were all named after the Harry potter houses or locations!
We also had LOTS of flowers, my mom is a florist so she was just SO excited for doing our flowers it was lovely.
Our cake was three tiers; lemon and lemon curd, chocolate orange and prosecco and raspberry jam. We incorporated Harry potter, Jetskiing and our dog onto the tiers too!
3. Who was your wedding dress by? Why did you choose it/ makes it special to you?
My wedding dress was beautiful by Enzoani. After trying on over 30 dresses I worried I would never find ‘the one’ and thought I would just have to make do… Then one day my best friend and sister-in-law planned a surprise trip and took me dress shopping for the day. When my sister-in-law pulled the dress from the rails I first of all refused to try it on thinking it was plain and wouldn’t suit me, it turned out that that was my dress! As soon as I put it on my face lit up and I knew I had to have it.

4. How excited were you when you found out you won the competition?
It was the most surreal experience! When I first received the message on Facebook from Bran I thought it was a scam! I actually called the shop (RS) to explain to them somebody was doing this and just to make them aware… it didn’t even click to me that I had actually won the competition until it was explained to me on that call! I was over the moon, I will admit I even cried! I just couldn’t wait to tell my bridesmaids! Jon was also very happy… he had agreed to buy my wedding shoes so he was let off the hook! The whole process was just like a fairytale, on my fitting appointment I took a few of my bridesmaids and we had prosecco and nibbles and it was just a lovely girly afternoon. The team are all so lovely – I also got to meet Rachel and I felt starstruck! What an incredible team!

5. Tell us about the BEST wedding moment, something that will be unforgettable to you.
As cliché as it sounds the best moment for me was the actual ceremony and walking down the aisle to Jon. Standing outside the room waiting with my dad and bridesmaids was something I will remember forever, the girls were so nervous and I was acting fine… until they had gone down the aisle and I turned to my dad and said ‘I’m so nervous help!’ he just replied ‘no, you’re fine, come on’ and in we went. In our whole 5 years together, I have only known Jon to cry once and didn’t expect him to shed a tear let alone sob! We wrote our own vows to each other and I can honestly say there was not a dry eye in the room, It was just beautiful, and I tear up now even thinking about it.
6. What was your first dance song?
Our first dance song was a Boyce Avenue cover of Chris Brown – Forever. We wanted something upbeat but still meaningful.
7. What is your Top Tip for wedding planning?
Our venue events co-ordinator (Shelley) and photographer (Lee Webb) were priceless to us on the day. Shelley kept everything running smoothly so I will say make sure you have faith in your events team! And Lee was actually more like a 6th bridesmaid than a photographer! We was his 300 and something-th wedding so his expertise was just incredible. He was fun but firm when he needed to be, he made sure the girls were in their dresses at the right time and even took my veil out for me!
8. What would your advice be for future brides?
Remember it’s a marriage not just a wedding! I see lots of people becoming bridezilla’s and there really is more to life! Wedding planning is stressful even for the most chilled out brides, but it will honestly be the best day of your life. Be nice but remember it’s YOUR day!
Also my most important tip – ask your venue to save you some cake!! We didn’t actually get to eat it on the day and was so grateful they kept some behind for us!
Thanks so much to Ellie and Jon for sharing their wedding with us. We love all the uniques decor they used to create the perfect wedding for them!
